Variety Wholesalers, Inc. is a closely-held North Carolina corporation with principal corporate offices located at 225 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, North Carolina and 218 S. Garnett Street in Henderson, North Carolina. The corporation operates over 440 retail stores as of 2007 in 14 states in the southeastern United States. 

John W. Pope, Sr. (1924 - 2006) was the founder of the company. James Arthur “Art” Pope is the chairman and chief executive officer of VW and of Variety Stores. Art is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, B.A. with Honors, and received his J.D. from Duke University. He was also elected to and served four terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives (1989-1992, 1999-2002).
